Pet-Friendly Flooring FAQs

There are a few different types of flooring that are good for pets that have accidents. Generally, waterproof vinyl and waterproof laminate are the best options for pets who have accidents. If you have a pet that is prone to accidents, avoid wood flooring and carpet.

Unless you clean the urine quickly, yes, pet urine can damage laminate flooring. It can get in the creases and cause warping and/or bubbling.

Certainly not carpet! Vinyl is a good option for shedders as it’s easy to clean and can also handle scratchy claws. Tile, laminate, and hardwood will also work for a pet who sheds a lot.

Waterproof vinyl or tile flooring is the best choice if you have older pets. It’s inexpensive, waterproof, scratch resistant, stain resistant, easy to clean, and comfortable underfoot.

While laminate flooring is not scratch resistant, it’s durable and it does well at hiding punctures and scratches.

Tile flooring can be a good option for pets as it’s durable, scratch resistant, and easy to clean. However, it is hard and cold, and can be uncomfortable for older pets and contribute to slips and falls. Natural stone can stain easily, plus it can be cold and uncomfortable for pets. However, it is durable and can be sealed to handle pet wear and tear.

If you desire hardwood but are worried about your pets causing damage, engineered hardwood is a good alternative. While it’s not completely resistant to pet wear and tear, it is durable and more able to withstand scuffs and scratches.

While neither are totally resistant to scratches, engineered hardwood offers superior resistance compared to traditional hardwood.
